Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Cloth
  • Owner's Manual
    • 1

Check the dash for any warning lights that may be lit up. Compare to the owner's manual, as each icon has a different meaning. Take your truck to an auto parts store or certified mechanic if you are unsure what the warning light means.

    • 2

Park the truck in a safe space if you see the "Check Engine" light or the "ABS" light come on. This means there may be a problem with the engine or the anti-lock breaking system. Contact a Toyota dealership for assistance, as driving with these lights on could potentially be dangerous.

    • 3

Ensure that the parking brake is fully released if the "Brake" indicator light is on. Pull over immediately if driving. Wait five minutes or until the truck is cool. Open the hood and check the level of brake fluid, if this level is normal, contact a mechanic or dealership for brake repair service.

    • 4

Turn the key to the off position and allow the engine to cool for ten minutes if the "Low Oil" light appears on dash. Access your engine and pull out the dipstick that is labeled "Engine Oil." Check the oil by cleaning off the dipstick. Wipe the dipstick with a cloth, reinsert it, pull it out again and then check the oil level. The correct level will be up to the notch on the dipstick. If it is low, add oil.

    • 5

Park the truck if the "Battery" light comes on. Turn the truck off. Open the hood and check the battery for corrosion. Lift the post covers on the battery and if no corrosion is present, remove the battery and take it to an auto parts store.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many chain auto part stores offer free diagnostic testing, which can give you a better idea as to what the issue may be.

  • Never drive your truck if a serious issue is suspected, as this could endanger yourself or others around you.
