How to Replace a 1998 Toyota Camry Driver Side Power Window Motor

The 1998 Toyota Camry was manufactured with electric power windows as optional equipment. The power windows use a small motor in each door that drives the window regulator. This motor can wear out and require replacement, which can take the average backyard mechanic about thirty minutes to complete.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
    • 1

Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal nut counterclockwise and pulling the terminal from the post. Place it aside, away from the battery.

    • 2

Remove the driver's side window switch assembly by prying up one corner gently with a screwdriver, then pulling the entire switch assembly out of the opening. Disconnect the wiring harness adapter plug in the rear of the switch assembly by pulling it apart. The switches can be removed from the car.

    • 3

Remove the door panel by turning the arm rest bolts and interior door handle screws counterclockwise. Pull the panel from the plastic pop rivets that hold it to the door metal by starting at one corner and tugging the rivets loose individually. It is common to have to replace a few of these rivets during this process, as they are brittle plastic and can snap easily. Place the panel away from the work area.

    • 4

Remove the power window motor by unplugging it from the wiring harness and turning the mount bolts counterclockwise. The motor pulls directly away from the window regulator gears. Replace the motor with a new unit by pressing it to the gears and securing the mount bolts. Reconnect the wiring harness by pressing the plugs together.

    • 5

Replace the door panel and switch assembly by tapping the pop rivets into their respective holes, securing the arm rest bolts and door handle screws, and attaching the switches to the wiring harness and pressing it into the door panel opening. Reconnect the battery and test the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check all of the fuses before replacing the motor.

  • Use extreme caution when working on a vehicle's electrical system.
