How to Replace a Side-View Mirror for a Toyota

How to Replace a Side-View Mirror for a Toyota

There are four types of side-view mirrors that may be installed on a Toyota. A manual mirror that has to be adjusted from the outside; a manual mirror with an interior adjustment lever; a powered mirror that can be adjusted by an electrical switch; or a powered and heated mirror. Regardless of the type, the side-view mirror is affixed to the door and removing it is fairly simple. Wire harnesses for power and or heated mirrors, however, may require gaining access behind the door panel to access the plug connections.

Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • 10mm nut driver Slotted screwdriver Phillips head screwdriver Replacement side-view mirror
    • 1

Open the door of the Toyota and lower the window. If it is a powered window, turn the ignition key back to the off position once the window is down.

    • 2

Remove the interior trim panel located in the front corner of the door covering the mirror. Pry if off carefully with the slotted screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove any foam insulation that may be used to plug the door frame holes covering the access to the mirror.

    • 4

Locate the wire harness and try to pull it out of the access hole to retrieve the plug connection. (If installing a manual mirror, skip this step and proceed to Step 8.) If the plug connection of the wire harness cannot be reached, remove the interior door panel to proceed.

    • 5

Locate the interior door panel retaining screws. There will be three to seven screws, and some may be concealed by interior caps or plugs the same color as the door panel. Pry the caps or plugs out with the slotted screwdriver. Remove the screws with the Phillips head screwdriver. Two of the door panel retaining screws will always be in the interior door handle assembly; another will be on or near the arm rest cup. Check the bottom of the door panel for any retaining screws.

    • 6

Pry the window regulator from the door panel arm rest carefully with the slotted screwdriver. Pry it upward, away from the base of the arm rest. Remove the wire harness attachments and set aside.

    • 7

Pry the door panel away from the door frame. There are retaining clips that snap and secure the panel in place; these need to be unseated. Lift the door panel upward once the retaining clips are unseated. Unplug any remaining wire harness connections, if desired. Only the side-view mirror wire harness needs to be accessed, so removing the panel altogether is not necessary. Unplug the wire harness connection.

    • 8

Remove the three 10mm retaining nuts from the side-view mirror studs located under the trim panel removed in Step 2. Be careful not to drop the nuts into the door cavity.

    • 9

Pry the mirror away from the outside of the door, being careful not to scratch the paint. Remove the mirror from the door.

    • 10

Reverse the procedure to reinstall the new side-view mirror.

Tips & Warnings

Before removing an interior door panel from a Toyota, be sure that side impact air bags are not installed. Obtain a procedure on how to turn them off before attempting to remove the panel
