How to Replace a 1989 Toyota Solenoid

How to Replace a 1989 Toyota Solenoid

By replacing the starter solenoid on your 1989 Toyota yourself, you can save money on labor charges. Another good thing is that you can access the starter solenoid without having to crawl under the car. The most important thing is choosing the proper starter solenoid if you are not going to buy a new one. You can buy a rebuilt starter solenoid or a remanufactured one, but the rebuilt solenoid may not contain all new internal parts. A remanufactured solenoid does have all new parts, so be sure to buy one of those if possible.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Marker
  • Masking tape
  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set
    • 1

Pop the hood and prop it open. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the nut.

    • 2

Disconnect the positive battery cable if your car has a cruise control module. Detach the cruise control actuator and the bracket using a wrench to remove the bolts. Remove the battery from the car.

    • 3

Pull the rubber boot away from the main starter wire and remove the nut to disconnect the wire. This is the heavy-gauge wire that goes to the starter. Mark the remaining wires on the starter using the masking tape and marker to note their proper locations. Disconnect the wires using a wrench to remove the nuts.

    • 4

Loosen the bolts on the starter and lift it out of the engine.

    • 5

Remove the screws holding the solenoid on the starter. Pull the solenoid off of the starter and put the new one in place. Tighten the screws with the screwdriver.

    • 6

Place the starter back on the engine and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Connect the wires to the starter and tighten the nuts with the wrench.

    • 7

Reconnect the negative battery cable if you didn't remove the battery. Tighten the cable with a wrench. If you did remove the battery, reposition it in the engine compartment. Reattach the cruise control actuator and the bracket using a wrench to secure the bolts. Reconnect the positive battery cable and tighten it, followed by the negative battery cable.

Tips & Warnings

Never attempt this procedure without disconnecting the battery as instructed. Failure to do so may result in electrical shock
