How to Replace Toyota Celica High Pressure Power Steering Hoses

Replace a High-Pressure Power Steering Hose on your Toyota Celica.

The steering system on your Toyota Celica uses a hydraulic system under high pressure to assist in steering your vehicle. Pressure from the steering pump operates a piston-and-cylinder assembly through a high-pressure hose. This hose may eventually develop leaks. With the power steering fluid level low, it will be difficult for you to maneuver the vehicle. When this happens, it's time to buy a new high-pressure hose.

• Floor jack
• 2 jack stands
• 2 chocks
• Drain pan
• Line wrench
• Ratchet and socket
• New power steering fluid

     Raise the front of your Toyota Celica using a floor jack and support it with 2 jack stands. Chock the rear wheels and apply the parking brakes.

     Position a drain pan under the car in the direction of the high-pressure hose on the steering pump. Disconnect the high-pressure hose from the power steering pump using a line wrench to avoid damage to the hose-retaining nut. Let the hose drain on the pan. Remove the center and right-hand engine under covers, using a ratchet and socket, to gain access to the other end of the high-pressure hose, if necessary. Disconnect the other end of the high-pressure hose using a line wrench and let the hose drain on the pan.

     Connect the lower end of the new high-pressure hose. Start the retaining nut by hand to avoid thread damage. Then, tighten the nut with the line wrench.

     Connect the other end of the new high-pressure hose to the power steering pump. Start the retaining nut by hand, and then tighten the nut with the line wrench. Refill the power steering reservoir with new power steering fluid, making sure the level reaches the "Full Cold" mark.

   Bleed the Steering System

     Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position, but do not start the engine. Turn the steering wheel slowly and completely from left to right 6 times. Lower the vehicle and remove the chocks. Start the engine and let it idle for 3 minutes.

     Turn the steering wheel completely to the right and keep it there for 3 seconds. Then, turn the steering wheel to the left and keep it there for 3 seconds. Repeat this procedure 6 times. Stop the engine.

     Check for leaks. Check the power steering fluid level and add if necessary.
