How to Reset the 1981 Toyota Cressida Sensor Light
The Toyota Cressida's computer system uses a number of sensors that monitor the engine for malfunctioning parts. When these sensors detect a problem, they prompt the computer to illuminate the corresponding error light on the dashboard. A code reader can then be used to determine which part has malfunctioned, and then the appropriate repairs can be performed. Once these repairs are complete, you must clear the error code from the Toyota's computer system by resetting the light.

Open the driver's side door and find the OBD-I diagnostic port located under the dashboard. The port has 12 holes in it and matches the end connector on the port scanner. If necessary, the Cressida's owner's manual can be used to further pinpoint the location of the plug.

Turn the Toyota's ignition to the "accessory" position. The dashboard lights will illuminate, but the engine will not start. Connect the code scanner to the port by pressing the plug into the port until you hear an audible click. Turn the reader on by pressing the power button or sliding the power switch to the "on" position.

Navigate the code reader's interface using the arrow keys. Select the option for diagnostic codes. A list of errors stored by the computer system will display on the screen. Write down these codes for future reference, then select each one and choose "clear." The exact method used to navigate the code reader will vary from one model to the next, so consult the documentation included with the reader for more specific instructions.
